Janet L. Branchaw is an Associate Professor of Kinesiology in the School of Education and the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Science Education and Community Engagement (WISCIENCE) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison). She earned her Ph.D. in physiology and completed postdoctoral training and a lectureship in undergraduate and medical physiology at UW–Madison’s School of Medicine. She joined UW-Madison’s Center for Biology Education after her postdoc and now directs the renovated center as WISCIENCE. Her research and programming work focus on the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative approaches to science education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with special emphasis on research training, research mentoring, assessment of student learning, and broadening participation in STEM. Dr. Branchaw led development of the Entering Research (ER) curriculum and the Entering Research Learning Assessment (ERLA). She also co-developed the second edition of the Entering Mentoring (EM) curriculum and co-founded the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER). Currently, she is collaborating with iBiology at the Science Communication Lab on an NIH funded project to create a “Build Your Research Community” online course for biomedical research trainees; is collaborating with Northwestern University’s Office for Undergraduate Research to adapt Entering Research activities for Humanities disciplines; and is leading UW-Madison’s HHMI-funded Inclusive Excellence project to increase 2- to 4-year STEM transfer in Wisconsin.
